Flower of the Star Magnolia

Here is a Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) flower blooming in Memphis, Indiana. According to Wikipedia, this shrub or small tree originated in Japan. It flowers appear in early spring before its leaves. The tree can grow to 6 meters (20 feet).

This planting consists of two trees that grow in a shaded area next to the house. It pretty much grows by itself in a gravel garden with some hostas and calla lillies for company.

Flowers of Bradford Pear

The Bradford Pear trees are flowering and here is a picture of some of these white flowers with a small amount of pink and green in the center.

While these trees are susceptible to splitting in high winds they have a very nice, compact round shape and these beautiful white flowers.

Woodpecker Holes in Fallen Bradford Pear Tree

I was cleaning up some storm damaged trees in my neighborhood over the last couple weeks and noticed this. I found a series of small holes in a Bradford Pear tree trunk made by a woodpecker. I am guessing the tree had about 10 holes in it.

Of course, the picture would have been much nicer if I would have actually gotten a picture of the bird making the holes!

Shriveled Dogwood Tree Berries

I am use to seeing these berries as bright red but winter has turned them black and shriveled. They sort of look like miniature prunes. Maybe the birds or deer will consume them and spread their seeds across the landscape.

Waiting for Spring

Here is a bud of a tree but I am not sure what species. It is a bud waiting to open so it can bring its color to a new season of springtime.

Bradford Pear Bud in Ice

Here is the bud of a Bradford Pear tree in ice. I was trying to catch a drop in mid air as it fell from the tip of the icicle but was not patient enough.
